The soil of Uttara Kannada district is mostly lateritic type, and is distributed in the pediplain area. It is characterised by high iron and aluminium content. It is mostly red in colour, though yellow loamy, pale to bright red colours are also seen. The major soil types are (i) hilly soil (ii) lateritic (iii) loamy and (iv) semi-black cotton (Source: CGWB Report, 2006)
Major Water Bearing Formations: (i) Shallow aquifers - alluvium along the stream courses, along coast, creeks, weathered zones of schists, metasedimentaries and metavolcanics occurring between the depths of 3 to 20 mbgl (ii) Deeper aquifers of fractured and jointed Schists, gneisses and metavolacanics and meta sedimentaries up to 200 mbgl Net annual ground water availability: 70765 (ham)
The water bearing formations are weathered & fractured Gneiss, Schist & Granite and alluvium. The water level during pre-monsoon is 1.85 mbgl to 15.17 mbgl & during post-monsoon is 1.65 mbgl to 9.40 mbgl. Nitrate occurs more than permissible limit which is around 140ppm. The water type is Ca - Mg bicarbonate to Na Chloride (Source: CGWB Report, 2006)
